In 2006, Italy was the fifth most-visited country in the world, with 41.1 million people choosing to travel to the European country. Indeed, many visitors head straight for the capital, whilst those who aren’t quite so interested in history, the country’s northern lakes such as Garda, or the region of Tuscany, offer both culture and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for holidaymakers. Alternatively, southern Italy enjoys the world-famous Mediterranean climate and food. As it goes, Italy is filled with possibilities for any visitor.
But, another destination that is worth visiting when travelling through Italy, is the city of Palermo. At over 2,700 years old, the city is the capital of Sicily. As such, it was named by the Ancient Greeks as ‘Panormus’ meaning ‘all port’. It is regarded by many visitors, both domestic and international, as a fascinating destination culturally, as well as historically.
One element in particular that attracts visitors to the city is the number of churches. The Cathedral of Palermo, for example, is of particular interest; characterised by the number of differing styles that contribute to its appearance. A long history of additions, alterations and restorations - the last of which occurred in the 18th century - have ensured that the building is of particular interest to expert and amateur historians alike.
Also worth discovering is the Palazzo dei Normanni; a notable example of Norman architecture that houses the famous Cappella Palatina. In fact, it was built at the end of the 15th century for the prefect of the city, in typical Catalan Gothic style with Renaissance influences.
And, if it is culture in particular you are looking for, there are further attractions worth visiting in the form of theatres. One of the most notable sights the city has to offer is the Teatro Massimo. Located on the Piazza Verdi, it is one of the largest opera houses in Europe. The building was finished in 1897, 22 years after being designed by architect Giovanni Battista Filippo Basile.
Furthermore, it is not only noted for being a fantastic visual attraction, but is also notorious for its perfect acoustics. Originally designed to house 3,000 people, it now seats 1,350, with the stage being surrounded by 7 tiers of boxes. And, if you are wishing to experience what this theatre has to offer, then you can enjoy a range of operas, ballets and concerts that are hosted at this wonderful attraction, all year round.
And when choosing where to stay, you will have little difficulty in finding suitable accommodation, with a range of hotels in Palermo available. But whatever reason you have to visit the city, a trip to Palermo will not be easily forgotten.
